I have a confession that’s kind of embarrassing to admit.
During our pre-marital counseling, I told our priest that I wanted my home to look like a magazine.
Yes, a magazine.
I had these grand visions of perfectly coordinated rooms, beautifully arranged spaces, and a home that was always camera-ready. Basically, I wanted to live in a Better Homes & Gardens spread.
Then life happened.
I became a mom to a 6-year-old overnight when I married my husband. We got pregnant immediately. Between school schedules, health issues, and first-trimester exhaustion, my magazine home dreams didn’t just fade – they completely shattered.
And you know what? I’m so grateful they did.
Because what I learned in that chaos completely transformed how I think about what makes a home beautiful.
The Social Media Trap
Here’s something that might shock you: those perfect Instagram homes you scroll past? They’re basically the home equivalent of food commercials that use mashed potatoes instead of ice cream.
It’s a carefully crafted illusion.
Every angle is chosen. Every item is staged. And I guarantee there’s a lot happening just outside the frame that we’re not seeing.
But somehow, we’re comparing our real, lived-in homes to these highlight reels and feeling like we’re failing.
What Home Really Means
Through my journey from wanting perfection to embracing “good enough,” I discovered something beautiful: home is a feeling, not a photo.
Your kids aren’t going to remember if your throw pillows were perfectly fluffed. They’re going to remember family movie nights and baking cookies, even if your kitchen was “less-than-perfect.”
The people who love you don’t care if your house is Instagram-worthy. They care about feeling welcome in your space.
Your Permission Slip
If you’ve been feeling like your home isn’t “good enough” compared to what you see online, I have something important to tell you.
But I’m not going to spoil it here – because this story deserves to be told in full, and the revelation that changed everything for me might just change everything for you too.
Listen to Episode 7: “I Wanted a Magazine Home… Until I Had Kids (Why Good Enough is Perfect)”
Sometimes the most beautiful homes are the ones that look lived in. Because that’s exactly what they are – lived in, loved in, and perfectly imperfect.
