I have a confession to make.
I thought about starting this podcast for five years. Five. Entire. Years.
I planned it in my head, imagined what episodes would sound like, even researched equipment, but I never actually recorded a single episode.
Then my lawyer gave me a deadline: get the podcast launched in 3-4 days or lose the trademark protection I’d been working on for months.
Want to know what happened next? I got everything done – recording, editing, platform setup, show notes – in less than 24 hours.
That’s the magic of deadlines. And it’s the same magic that can finally get you to tackle that closet you’ve been avoiding for months.

Why We Procrastinate on Decluttering
Most of us don’t have natural deadlines for organizing our homes. Nobody’s making us clean out our kitchen cabinets. There’s no external pressure to sort through old clothes.
So we keep telling ourselves we’ll do it “someday” when we have more time, energy, or the perfect organizing system.
But here’s what I’ve learned after working with thousands of clients: someday never comes.
The Deadline Effect
When you have a real deadline, something magical happens:
✨ Decision paralysis disappears – You don’t have time to agonize over whether you might need something someday
✨ Perfectionism takes a backseat – Done becomes better than perfect because perfect means it never happens
✨ Clarity emerges – You can suddenly see what really matters versus what you’ve been overthinking
I see this with clients facing moves, hosting events, or dealing with family situations. The approaching deadline cuts through months of indecision and helps them make progress in days.
How to Create Your Own Deadline
Since most decluttering doesn’t come with built-in urgency, you need to manufacture it:
External Accountability Options:
- Invite friends over for dinner (suddenly that dining room table needs to be clear!)
- Schedule a donation pickup
- Book a house cleaner (you’ll want to pick up first)
- Tell someone your plan and ask them to check in
Make It Matter: The best deadlines have real consequences. Pick something that creates genuine motivation for you.

Your Challenge
Here’s what I want you to do:
- Pick one area you’ve been avoiding (closet, garage, that one drawer)
- Set a deadline within the next two weeks
- Create accountability – invite someone over or schedule a pickup
- Focus on progress, not perfection
You’ll be amazed by how much clarity and motivation that deadline creates.
Remember: You can think about organizing for years, but thinking and doing are completely different things. At some point, you have to move from planning to action.
