Our spices have slowly gotten out of control.
Two years ago I bought these containers from Amazon, and I still absolutely love them! They hold an average bottles worth of spices, the lids are easy to remove and large enough to insert various measuring spoon sizes, and they’re clear which means the drawer is happily colored by the different dried and powdered flavors. I keep them all in the drawer right next to my stove so I have easy to reach spice organization, and I added these printable labels so I can easily find exactly what I need. (I’ll soon be replacing all of these labels with clear versions of the white circular labels that are there now. I liked the white, but I didn’t like how they blocked the spice color. Printing them on clear sticker paper will fix that problem.) 🙂
The only problem I’ve run into is with the overflow cabinet above this drawer. It’s where I put the larger containers and the spices I don’t use as frequently. The layout has worked really well because when one of my glass containers gets low I can just reach in this cabinet and fill it up again, but the cabinet itself has gotten rather out of hand. I have too many large and awkward sized bottles in there, and every time I reach in to get something I seem to knock over five other things.
I turned, yet again, to Amazon for an answer, and I’m thrilled to have found Spicy Shelf!
The hardest part about using it was emptying the cabinet and organizing the spices. My husband was kind enough to put our shelves together while I cleaned the cabinet and alphabetized everything so I don’t know how easy it is to assemble, but he had it done quickly and with no swearing so it couldn’t have been that bad!
(Ignore that white bar that’s taped to the bottom of that shelf. That was from a different spice organizer that didn’t work out.)
Sorting through the spices was painful because, just like anywhere there’s clutter, I ended up having a lot of duplicates. Because the cabinet was a mess, there were times when I couldn’t find what I needed, added it to the grocery list, and now we have more than we need. The good news is that now that I can find everything, that won’t happen again.
Once everything was alphabetized, I put it back in the cabinet, and voila! I love it because I can stack everything around the perimeter of the cabinet instead stacking the bottles on top or in front of one another together like they were before. Now I can get to what I need without digging through jar after jar and being the victim of a spice avalanche.
It probably sounds silly, but it’s amazing how just conquering the clutter is such a small space can make life easier and me so happy! It really motivates me to keep going. I can’t even imagine how much free time I’d have if my whole house was this organized and I no longer wasted a ton of time looking for what I needed.
How do you store your spices? Have you decluttered a space lately (big or small) that’s excited you and made your life a little easier?

i love that you alphabetized – that’s something I would do too!
I recently did our kitchen pantry – it was so liberating!

I just can’t help myself! It makes it so much easier to find things… as long as the kids stay out of the spice drawer 😉

My kitchen has an amazing built-in spice rack. We built it into the existing window frame after taking out the window between the bathroom and kitchen. What? You don’t have a window between your bathroom and kitchen? Our house was built in stages; so at one stage the wall that is now in between the bathroom and kitchen was an exterior wall. For some reason when they built on the kitchen, dining room, family room, and laundry room, they left the window. Because of course you want to be making your morning coffee and look over to see your spouse getting out of the shower. That was one of the first things to go; but then we were left with this awkward hole in the wall. But with a bit of plasterboard and wood, it became a very sensible spice rack. I love it and couldn’t imagine living in a kitchen without a built-in spice rack now!

That sounds like a great use of an awkward window, and I’m totally jealous of your spice rack now!

Wow, Emily – great job on the spice organization! Love the way you organized things alphabetically too. And it’s always amazing how good we feel after we organize something, isn’t it? Medicine cabinet is my next organization project! Cheers, Catherine

Thanks, Catherine! I always have them alphabetized. No one else in my family seems to appreciate it lol.

As a professional organizer, I’m always game for a quick project like this! I’ve heard of the Spicy Shelf, but have not seen in action prior to this post. Thanks for the demo!
