February Holidays and Observances
Like every winter month, February has a busy holiday calendar! Here are some of the most important holidays and observances during the second month of the year:
Groundhog’s Day – 2 February
We celebrate Groundhog’s Day on February 2nd each year and it marks the time when a groundhog is said to predict whether spring will come early or late. The tradition has been celebrated in the United States and Canada since the mid-1800s and has become a popular event at festivals and in small towns.
On this day, a groundhog is taken out of its burrow to look for its shadow. If it can cast a shadow, then that means six more weeks of winter are in store for us. If it does not see its shadow, that means spring is on its way.
Groundhog Day is often celebrated with parades, festivals, and other events. People also enjoy groundhog-related foods like chocolates, cookies, and candy, while groundhog-themed decorations like stuffed animals, mugs, and clothing items are popular as well.
Valentine’s Day – 14 February
Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th each year and is a day dedicated to love and romance. People around the world show their love and affection for one another by sending gifts, cards, and flowers and going out for romantic dinners and activities.
In some countries, it is even referred to as “The Festival of Love”. It celebrates the special bond between two people. In some cultures, couples exchange gifts to show how much they care for each other, while in other cultures it is tradition to express love and appreciation non-verbally. Different countries all over the world have their own unique traditions to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
For example:
- In Finland and Estonia, on February 14th, people celebrate Friends’ day – they show their platonic love to their closest ones.
- In Japan, women give chocolate and other gifts to men.
- In Korea, Valentine’s day is one of the 12 days in the calendar they celebrate love on. Just like in Japan, on February 14th, women gift men they love chocolates.
No matter how you celebrate it, Valentine’s Day is a special day to have a good time with the person you love.
Presidents’ Day – 20 February
Every year, on the third Monday of February, we honor and remember America’s Presidents and their attribution for where our country is today. It’s a public holiday in a lot of the US states. February 20th is also George Washington’s birthday.

History of February
How February got its name. Why is it called February?
The name for this month is derived from the Latin word “februarius” which means “to cleanse” or “purify.” The name is derived from the purification ritual Februa held each year on the 14th of February in Ancient Rome.
Februa is believed to be derived from the name of the Roman god Februus, who was the god of purification and the dead. There is also evidence of a ceremony involving priests giving goats and lamb sacrifices in the name of Februus, which might have given rise to the modern word.
February is also the last month of winter. It was also the time when people would purify their houses and themselves after the celebrations of the New Year.
How many days are in February?
February is the second month of the year, and it’s the only month with 28 days, except for leap years when it has 29 days.
Why does February only have 28 days?
The Roman calendar used to have only 10 months, but Julius Caesar added January and February when he reformed the calendar in 45 BC. This was when the Gregorian calendar replaced the old Roman calendar.
February was the last month to be added, and ended up with a slightly shorter length as a result. The Romans’ calendar wasn’t based on the exact number of days in a month, so February was simply adjusted to fit.
The Calendar year is 365 days. However, the Solar year (also known as the Tropical year) – the amount of time it takes to go around the sun and back, is about 365 days 5 hours 48 min 45 sec. Modern-day calendars added the leap year to make sure that the calendar year would match the solar year.
Which years are leap years?
This happens because 4 years is the amount of time it takes for the calendar year to catch up with the solar year. A leap year is any year evenly divisible by 4, such as 2016, 2020, 2024, etc.

Supplies to Print Your Free February Calendar Printables
There are a few supplies that you’ll want to prepare in advance when printing your calendar templates. These are some of my favorite printing and planning supplies:
Printers
Paper
Pens
Frixion erasable pens are amazing! They come in black, blue, and a mix of bright colors, and they aren’t like the erasable pens I grew up with that made a mess of paper and didn’t really erase. They erase easily, look great, and are my most favorite pens to plan with because I can color-code events, and I can easily erase them when things change.
If you want a pen that doesn’t erase, the BIC Gel-Ocity pens are my favorite. They write so smoothly and area. pleasure to use. According to my Amazon history, I’ve purchased the 12 pack linked below 14 times so my love for them is pretty serious!
Highlighters
These Frixion Highlighters are just as great as the pens! They erase beautifully, don’t damage paper, and make my color-coding dreams come true!
If you like a more subtle highlighter, these Mildliner Highlighters are gorgeous. I like to use these when I want a softer look, and I’m certain I won’t need to change or erase anything. They also have ink on both ends so you can easily make different sized lines.
Post-it Notes
I love post-it notes. They’re great for reminders, organizing ideas, quick decluttering labels, and even bookmarks! I like to use post-its in various colors, sizes, and sometimes different shapes too. The heart notes are a great way to leave little love notes for your partner or kiddo. These are my favorites:
